Samantha Beth Southworth of the University of Michigan School of Nursing has won AMRI’s 2017 Scholarship in the amount of $1,000.
Samantha, who has worked as a registered nurse foralmost three years, will use the award to continue her studies in Michigan’s Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (ACP-NP) master's program.
After graduation, Samantha plans to continue working with unstable patients in the pediatric bone marrow transplant (BMT) and hematological/oncological (hem/onc) inpatient unit.
“I fell in love with the hem/onc and BMT population immediately and my passion for this field grows daily,” Samantha wrote in her winning essay. “This population is a constant challenge, a never ending learning experience and brings so many valuable relationships. I absolutely love working at the bedside with patients and families, but am also looking forward to moving into a provider role and being able to directly create and manage treatment plans.”
Samantha’s heartfelt essay beat out four other finalists by receiving the most Facebook support–with a total of 430 votes.
For the second year in a row, AMRI received a large number of submissions from an impressive group of applicants. All applicants were asked to write a 2,000-word essay answering two questions about their careers in medicine. AMRI narrowed all the submissions to the five best entries and opened them up to a public vote on Facebook.
As the winner, Samantha will receive a $1,000 check and a certificate. We wish her and the rest our finalists the best of luck as they continue to pursue their dreams in the field of medicine.
