FAQ of the Week: Do I need to demonstrate hands-on skills for all aspects of ACLS in order to meet the requirement?

The national standard for ACLS is that students must perform the skills that they are required to use in the course of their professional activities. The minimum for all providers is demonstrated proficiency at:

  1. airway/emergency ventilation;
  2. defibrillation; and,
  3. chest compressions.

Many mistakenly think that ACLS certification requires skill demonstration in all of the procedures covered in the educational program. The fact is, most ACLS certified clinicians use a limited number of those skills in their daily practice.
