We’ve all been there. We need to draw a patient’s blood for testing or we are trying to administer an IV, and the patient’s veins are particularly difficult find. Instead of needlessly sticking them over and over in an attempt to find a good vein, medical personnel may soon be able to rely on a simple device to help.
Nidhi Goyal of Industry Tap reports on this new technology in a recent article. The device was designed by Christie Medical Holdings in Memphis, Tennessee, and it enables phlebotomists and other medical staff to see veins underneath the patient’s skin by illuminating them using simple, painless infra-red light. The VeinViewer is extraordinarily accurate and, according to Goyal, “can find veins up to 0.4 inches or 10mm deep.”
