Type 1 Diabetes Is on the Rise in America’s Youth

Type 1 diabetes is diagnosed in people who have lost their ability to produce insulin. Mary Elizabeth Dallas of WebMD reports that in recent years, more and more children, particularly those between the ages of 5 and 9 years, have been diagnosed with this disease.

The findings of the SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth registry, one of the largest U.S. studies of diabetes in children, were sobering. Between 2002 and 2009, the rate of type 1 diabetes rose from 24.4 cases per 100,000 children to 27.4 per 100,000 children.  The sampling included a large and diverse portion of the United States.

The children who have been diagnosed with juvenile diabetes will require ongoing medical care for their conditions including insulin injections. In addition to damage to the eyes, nerves and kidneys, high blood sugar levels can slowly damage blood vessels, and lead to heart problems so consistent monitoring is necessary.
