The Expanding Waistline Epidemic Is Threatening Americans’ Health

Americans aren’t getting heavier, but their waistlines are increasing. This problem is reported by Karen Kaplan of the Los Angeles Times in her article, Obesity rates have stabilized, but our waistlines are still growing

This disturbing trend, which was published by researchers at the CDC in a recent edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association, is applicable to all demographic groups. This is cause for alarm given that excess belly fat is well known to increase a person’s risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Rather than relying on BMI charts alone, doctors should be paying attention to how their patients are carrying their weight. Those with larger waistlines are strongly advised to take up a diet and exercise regimen or step up the one they already have. Doing so can increase their longevity.
