Teleflex Incorporated, headquartered in Wayne, Pennsylvania, is a top global provider of specialty medical devices used in critical care and surgical environments. The company’s mission is to improve outcomes and enhance patient and provider safety.
They recently introduced two new products to enhance the outcomes of percutaneous surgery. The PercuvanceTM System and the MiniLap® Surgical System. These systems make minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures even less invasive for patients. When medically appropriate, percutaneous surgery is preferred by both doctors and patients as it results in less trauma, faster healing times and very little scarring.
The PercuvanceTM Percutaneous Surgical System, which recently received clearance from the FDA, was used on a patient for the first time at Cleveland Clinic in March of 2015. MedGadget reports, “The system works by positioning a trocar through which tools are exchanged and inserting the 2.9 mm shaft nearby. The shaft is aligned with the trocar and when pushed through the opening, the instruments can be attached and exchanged extracorporeally.” This enables surgeons use full size tools while leaving only a small scar at the incision site. Also, according to Teleflex, surgeons who have tried the system state that it requires a short learning curve.
The MiniLap® Percutaneous Surgical System was introduced at the 2015 Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) Annual Meeting. SAGES Meeting Co-Chair Dr. Aurora Pryor reports that it was one of the “coolest products being shown off in the exhibit hall.” The MiniLap® System has a slim, proprietary steel shaft with a diameter of just 2.3 mm and it can be inserted percutaneously using an integrated needle tip. Its patented design enables the grasper jaws to open as wide as 12.5 mm so that surgeons can grasp larger structures such as distended gall bladders. The MiniLap Percutaneous Surgical System includes alligator graspers, clutch graspers, babcock graspers and bowel graspers.
BusinessWire® reports, “Initially, both the PercuvanceTM and MiniLap® Systems will play supporting roles in common, less complex procedures in general surgery (e.g., lap cholecystectomies or appendectomies) and gynecological surgery. As they gain experience, surgeons may find these devices valuable in more complex abdominal procedures.”
