On January 22nd of this year, an event at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank was held to honor emergency medical teams who have used their skills to save lives. One of those honored at the event was 11-year old Kendall Stilwell. This heroic little girl’s quick thinking and ability to take action saved her grandmother’s life.

In the early hours of June 25 of last year, Kendall’s grandmother, 71-year old Rita Lovato, went into cardiac arrest. Upon finding her grandmother unresponsive and not breathing, the little girl knew what to do. “I called 911,” she told reporters, “and I began to do CPR. It was a really scary moment.”

Kendall was not familiar with how to perform CPR, but a firefighter/paramedic, who was also honored at the event, helped her calm down and then explained what to do over the phone. As instructed, Kendall performed hands-only CPR as he counted out the beats for her.

When rescue workers arrived and took over, Lovato was taken to West Hills Hospital where she fully recovered, miraculously with no brain-damage. She joined her granddaughter at the ceremony.

Deputy Chief Daryl C. Arbuthnott, who spoke at the event, stated that knowledge of CPR is very important as it can double the survival rate of those suffering from cardiac arrest.

Video footage of event and audio of Stilwell’s 911 call can be found here.
