Overnight Stays in Outpatient Surgical Centers?

Overnight Stays in Outpatient Surgical Centers?

Ambulatory surgical centers typically have hours of operation during the day and close at night with all patients back at home to complete their recoveries. However, as reported by David Bernard in Outpatient Surgery Magazine, one center in Bethesda, MD has petitioned the state for approval to offer overnight recovery services as well.

Explains Bernard, “According to CMS guidelines, ambulatory surgery patients must be discharged in under 24 hours, but the guidelines don’t specify that they must be discharged on the same calendar day.” Allowing for overnight recovery times for patients receiving more invasive surgical procedures can improve treatment for patients as well as allow for more types of surgeries to be performed in ASC’s.

You can learn more by reading Bernard’s article “Same Day Surgery’s Overnight Expansion.” What are your thoughts on bringing overnight treatment to your surgical center?
