New USDA Dietary Guidelines To Lift Cholesterol Restriction

Americans no longer need to limit their cholesterol intake to 300 milligrams a day. According to USA Today, the longstanding restriction promoted by the nation’s top nutrition advisory panel is expected to be scrapped in the 2015 edition of theDietary Guidelines for Americans.

While moderation will still be encouraged, the federal Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s new guidance makes it clear that, “Cholesterol is not considered a nutrient of concern for overconsumption.” The updated recommendation is consistent with the views of other groups that promote heart health. Both the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association have changed their messaging with regard to limiting cholesterol intake.

The anticipated change to federal dietary guidelines is receiving strong support from cardiologists nationwide. Steven Nissen, chairman of cardiovascular medicine at the prominent Cleveland Clinic told USA Today, “It's the right decision. We got the dietary guidelines wrong. They've been wrong for decades. We told people not to eat eggs. It was never based on good science.”
