Minnesota Facility Becomes First ASC to Use Disinfecting Robots

Amid growing national concern over infection prevention, a Minnesota ambulatory surgery center will now use disinfecting robots to sterilize its surgical suites.  St. Cloud Surgical Center is the nation’s first ASC to utilize Xenex robots. The robots, which are currently used by a number of hospitals nationwide, pulse Xenon gas through an ultraviolet flash lamp at high intensity. The process targets and kills germs on surfaces and in the air more effectively than traditional cleaning methods.

In an article in the San Antonio Express-News, Julie Tonsager, the facility’s operating room team leader said, “The germs are getting tougher, and so it was important for us to take the battle against infections to the next level to ensure our patients receive the best care – and the Xenex robot allows us to do just that.”

The facility implemented the new disinfecting robots at the perfect time as CMS recently released new infection control requirements that cover a wide range of infection prevention protocols including hand hygiene, barrier protection, employee health, environmental services and equipment reprocessing.
