Hospitals and ASCs may Benefit from the BD-CareFusion Merger

Michelle Fay Cortez and Matthew Monks of Bloomberg News report that Becton, Dickinson (BD) will be acquiring CareFusion in a $12.2 billion deal that is expected to reduce overhead expenses and result in greater cost savings and convenience to hospitals and as ASCs.

BD currently sells laboratory equipment, diagnostic tests and various drug delivery systems such as syringes and hypodermic needles. CareFusion is a leading provider of infusion pumps and drug dispensing systems. The merger of these two companies is expected to result in $250 million in cost savings by 2018. These savings should result in lower costs for customers who rely on these services.

Dan O’Connor of Outpatient Magazine reports that “the combination of the 2 companies' complementary product portfolios will offer integrated medication management solutions and smart devices, from drug preparation in the pharmacy, to dispensing on the hospital floor, administration to the patient and subsequent monitoring.”
