Dozens of health coaching apps have popped up in recent years to help overweight Americans shed pounds and improve inactive lifestyles. Now health tech company Vida Health and pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca are hoping that same model will work for heart attack victims. The two companies have partnered to launch a smartphone app to help heart attack survivors recover more quickly and make lifestyle changes that will reduce their chances of second attack.
Initially, the HIPAA-compliant app will only be available through a trial program at Duke University. The feature-rich application will offer educational videos, articles, food journals, and live digital coaches that walk participants through the recovery process step by step. The heart-focused app builds upon Vida Health’s existing cloud-based smartphone app that offers health coaching for a variety of chronic conditions.
“We’ve already seen that we’ve improved outcomes and lowered costs for other needs: Seven out of eight people lose weight using Vida Health,” says Stephanie Tilenius, CEO of Vida Health.
Because medication adherence is also critical to improving outcomes for people who have suffered a heart attack, the app will help AstraZeneca understand how patients take medications during recovery.
