For 14 years straight, nursing tops the list of America’s most trustworthy professions according to the latest results from a new Gallup poll. Nurses beat out doctors and pharmacists for the top spot with 85 percent of respondents rating the honesty and ethical standards of nurses as “very high” or “high”.
Pharmacists came in second place with 68 percent of Americans giving them “very high” or “high” ratings. Doctors came in a close third with 67 percent of Americans agreeing they have “very high” or “high” honesty and ethical standards.
Pamela F. Cipriano, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, president of the American Nurses Association (ANA) says the poll results not only shine a spotlight on the public’s faith in nurses but also reveals why more nurses should be in executive positions and at the board room table.
“It's essential that we leverage this trust to lead and implement change in the healthcare system," Cipriano says. “Hospitals, healthcare systems and other organizations are lacking an important perspective and can't make fully competent decisions if they don't have registered nurses at the board table or in the C-suite.”
