Heart health campaigns nationwide are in full swing to help bring awareness of cardiovascular disease. Since 2009, February has officially been designated as Heart Health Month in an effort to “turn the tide on the number one killer of American women and men.”
On February 6, heart health advocates will shine a spotlight on heart disease and stroke, particularly in women, with National Wear Red Day. Supporters are asked to wear red the entire day, to share their photos on social media using the hashtag #GoRed, and to donate funds for awareness campaigns and research designed to help prevent cardiovascular disease. According to GoRedforWomen.org, one-third of women now say they talk with their doctor about developing heart-healthy plans, a significant rise since the first National Wear Red Day launched in 2003. Death in women due to heart disease and stroke has also decreased by 30 percent in the past 10 years.
