FDA Approves New Stomach Drain Device for Obese Patients

The FDA recently approved a new weight loss device that takes a direct approach to eliminating excess calories from the diet. It literally drains them down the toilet before the body has time to digest them.

The AspireAssist system is a thin tube that gets endoscopically implanted inside the stomach and connects to a port in the skin of the belly.

Approximately 20 minutes after eating a meal, patients who have the implant connect it to an external device that drains the contents into the toilet.

The device, which is manufactured by Aspire Bariatrics of King of Prussia, Pa., prevents the absorption of approximately 30 percent of consumed calories.

During clinical trials, 111 participants who received AspireAssist and made other lifestyle modifications lost 12.1 percent of their total body weight on average.

The FDA says some of the side effects associated with the device include: occasional indigestion, nausea, vomiting, constipation and diarrhea.

Patients 22 and older who have a BMI between 35 and 55 are ideal candidates for the device, which costs $7,000-10,000.
