The surgical team at a Chinese hospital will pay a steep price for taking several surgical selfies while operating on an unconscious patient. The photos, which were taken to commemorate the last time the surgical team would use that particular facility, attracted more than 8 million social media views and elicited strong public outrage in China. The Wall Street Journal quoted one angry blogger who wrote, “These are serious procedures, the patient is still lying there, and the doctors are posing for selfies! This is malicious provocation.”
Chinese health authorities demoted three of the hospital’s top executives and docked a hefty three months’ salary from everyone in the photograph. They also ordered the hospital and staff to issue public apologies.
Public backlash for similar behavior in the United States was equally strong when media reports revealed that Joan Rivers’ private physician asked a member of her surgical team to photograph her with the unconscious comedienne before she went into cardiac arrest.
