Congratulations to AMRI’s 2018 Scholarship Recipient: Stacy Slater

AMRI is proud to announce that Stacy Slater has won its 2018 scholarship for healthcare students.

Stacy is currently enrolled in the accelerated Second Degree BSN program at the University of Houston at Sugar Land. She will use the $1,000 scholarship award to complete her nursing degree by December 2018. After graduation, she hopes to care for patients as a Medical-Surgical nurse.

Prior to pursuing a nursing degree, Stacy worked for a medical device company as a technical associate in the operating room. It is there that she discovered she wanted to work more closely with patients as a nurse. She says, “I was shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the brightest surgeons and nurses in my accounts, absolutely loving every second of my time there in the hospitals and surgery centers. It was then that I realized, not only was this job out-of-this-world awesome, but it gave me the direction I was missing as a recent college graduate and passionate scientist.”

Despite encountering obstacles along the way in her journey to become a nurse—including recovering from PTSD and rebuilding after Hurricane Harvey devastated her hometown—Stacy’s determination is stronger than ever to make an impact in the healthcare field.

She says, “My purpose is to believe in who I am to bring healing and hope to others. I want my practice as a Registered Nurse to serve as my appreciation in helping those that hurt, are at a loss, affected traumatically, while attuning to their close loved ones simultaneously.”

Stacy’s heartfelt essay was selected over four other finalists to receive the $1,000 scholarship, which has been awarded for the last three years to a student working toward a career that requires advanced life support skills.

All scholarship applicants were asked to write a 2,000-word essay answering two questions about their careers in health care. AMRI narrowed all the submissions to the five best entries and then chose Stacy’s heartfelt essay as the winner.

“Stacy’s passion for helping others is what really shined through in her essay,” says Brooke Kauffman, an AMRI administrator. “We’re delighted to play a small part in helping her achieve her dream and save lives.”
