Changes Are Coming to Prevent Wrongly Connected Patient Tubing

Jim Burger of Outpatient Surgery Magazine reports on the problem of wrongly connected patient tubing in this recently published article. In it, Burger explains that it is not only possible, it’s actually easy to mistakenly connect a feeding tube to a tracheostomy tube or an intravenous tube to an epidural one. And this sort of mistake can prove deadly.

The article reports on a recently finding by the Joint Commission which attributes at least 117 cases of such a thing happening which in turn has led to 21 preventable patient deaths.  The International Organization for Standardization has responded by developing new standards for connectors can make connecting wrong tubing impossible these standards are coming soon so ambulatory surgical centers should be prepared for the change.
