CELL PHONE USE LINKED TO INCREASED RISK OF BRAIN TUMOR

The latest clinical research shows that long-term use of both cordless and mobile phones is linked to an increased risk of developing a glioma, the most common type of brain tumor seen in human beings.

The risk triples for those who have used these types of devices for more than 25 years, and risk is greatest for individuals who started using the devices before the age of 20.

“Doctors should be very concerned by this and discuss precautions with their patients,” said Lennart Hardell, MD, PhD, professor of Oncology at University Hospital in Orebro, Sweden. Hardell suggested taking such precautions as using hands-free phones with the speaker, or communicating via text-messages rather than phoning.

The recent increase in the use of wireless communications has resulted in increased exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMFs). The brain is the main target of RF-EMF when the source is mobile or cordless phones. The greatest exposure is on the same side of the brain where the phone is held when being used.

The study included 1,498 patients with malignant brain tumors. The mean age was 52. The majority of patients had a diagnosis of glioma; and, in about half of the cases reported, they were of the most malignant variety: astrocytoma grade IV. There were 3,530 controls, with a mean age of 54.

The study was published October 28, 2014 in Pathophysiology.
