Canadian Researchers Discover Rare Heart and Gut Disease

Science Daily® recently published a report about a newly learned disease that affects both cardiac and digestive functions of patients who have it. The discovery of this disease, Chronic Atrial Intestinal Dysrhythmia syndrome (CAID) was made by physicians and researchers at CHU Sainte-Justine, Université de Montréal, CHU de Québec, Université Laval and Hubrecht Institute.

CAID is a serious illness that can affect pediatric patients. It usually results in a slow heart rate that requires a pacemaker or digestive problems that require intraveneous feeding and sometimes even bowel surgery. Researchers believe that it is a genetic disease caused by a mutation to the SGOL1 gene.
