Blood Type May Be a Risk Factor for Heart Disease

A new heart health study spells good news for people with blood type O, but not so good news for everyone else. Based on the study’s findings, people with blood type A, B and AB are 15 percent more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than those with blood type O. They also have an increased risk of having a shorter lifespan.

The study included 50,000 participants in Northeast Iran who ranged from middle-aged to elderly. Researchers followed them over seven years. Dr. Arash Etemadi, an epidemiologist at the U.S. National Institutes of Health and the study’s lead investigator, said, “It was very interesting to me to find out that people with certain blood groups — non-O blood groups — have a higher risk of dying of certain diseases.”

According to Etemadi, one possible explanation for the increased risk among non-O blood types is a higher tendency to develop blood clots, which can lead to heart problems. In addition to cardiovascular disease, the study found that non-O blood types had a 55 percent increased risk of developing gastric cancer.
