Are Taxi Cabs an Acceptable Way for Unaccompanied Surgical Patients to Return Home?

Kendal Gapinski of Outpatient Surgery Magazine recently published an article on this topic after an anesthesiologist posted the question on the site’s Second Opinions Board. Respondents to the question seemed to be in agreement that sending post-surgical patients, even those who only had minor procedures under propofol, should only be released to the care of a responsible adult who can take responsibility for the patient’s safe care during the recovery period.

Sending any patient home in a taxi would put a liability risk on both the driver and the cab company. Few taxi drivers would even be willing to sign a discharge sheet in such a case. If your patients do not have someone who can drive them home, a medical transport service is the best alternative.
