For their 2015 salary survey, Outpatient Surgery Magazine asked ASC and hospital administrators around the country a compelling question: “Is your paycheck keeping pace with your expanding job responsibilities?” The not-so-surprising answer across the board was “no.”
On average, survey respondents who worked in an ASC made $108,690, approximately 7 percent less than the $116,628 earned by their hospital counterparts. While it may be hard for most to complain about earning a six-figure salary, Outpatient Surgery reports this average has remained relatively flat compared to 2014 average salaries. Despite the flat growth in salaries, respondents say their responsibilities continue to increase.
Bonus Breakdown
ASC administrators who earned a bonus received around 6 percent of their salary, while hospital administrators averaged bonuses of less than 4 percent of their salary. Of those who received no bonus at all, twice as many worked at hospitals than at ASCs.
Respondents at a Glance
According to Outpatient Surgery, the average respondent has been doing their current job for 10 years or less. They are being asked to pack more into their work week than agreed to when they took the job. One exasperated respondent said, "I'm a working manager with not enough time to contribute to management duties.”
Why So Busy?
More than 77 percent of ASC administrators say their responsibilities have increased over the last four years. For many, larger case volumes mean more staff that need training and supervision. In addition many administrators report being 100 percent in charge of their facility’s purchasing budget as well as responsible for implementing and learning electronic medical records and other healthcare IT systems. Despite the additional workload, only 62.8 percent say they received a raise in the previous 12 months.
