Pauline Anderson of Medscape reports on an investigational new opioid, TRV130 by Trevena Inc., that is showing promising results in new studies. Dr. Frank Skobieranda, vice president of Trevena, the company that funded the research, recently presented the findings of the study at a PAINWeek 2015 session in Las Vegas.
Dr. Skorbieranda told the attendees at PAINWeek 2015 that "TRV130 provided really robust, profound pain relief." In addition to providing pain relief, the study showed this drug to be safe in a respiration capacity. Researchers monitoring oxygen saturation of patients being administered this drug found only a “very modest dose-related effect of TRV130 both in the short term and the long term,” according to Dr. Skobieranda.
The study, which looked at the results of this drug as used for treatment of post-operative pain, showed positive results. “The data from this trial showed that TRV130, when given on-demand, matched morphine efficacy for pain relief with a markedly improved safety and tolerability profile,” said Neil Singla, M.D., chief scientific officer of Lotus Clinical Research and lead investigator of the study. “The challenges of safely and adequately titrating morphine are well recognized, and these data suggest that, if approved, TRV130 may provide a better option than currently available opioid analgesics.”
The drug is currently available as an intravenous product that would need to be administered in a controlled hospital setting. Worth is currently being done, however, to develop an oral formulation. Adverse side effects are typical of opioids and include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, somnolence and constipation. No serious side-effect were reported.
