Honor Whiteman of Medical News Today reports that Australian researchers from the Queensland Brain Institute at the University of Queensland may have found an effect treatment for the treatment of Alzheimer’s patients by simply using a new non-invasive ultrasound technology.
This is an extremely important breakthrough as there is currently no known treatment that can reverse the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s and dementia, and the problem is growing. According to Whiteman, by 2050, an estimated 16 million Americans will suffer from this disease.
Many researchers believe that Alzheimer’s is the result of beta-amyloid proteins that have clumped together in the brain forming plaques that inhibit communication between nerve cells. Researchers Prof. Jurten Gotz and Gerhard Leinenga discovered that by using their new ultrasound technology, they were able to effectively remove beta-amyloid plaques from the brains of mice who suffered from Alzheimer’s. As a result, the mice had their memories restored.
The results of this study were published in the medical journal, Science and Translational Medicine. You can learn more by reading the full article here.
