Nation’s Oldest Practicing Nurse Still Working at 90

Forget retirement; 90-year-old Florence “SeeSee” Rigney has too many lives to save to let a little thing like age keep her out of the OR. Earlier this month, her co-workers at Tacoma General Hospital in Washington state surprised her on her 90th birthday with a party and a proclamation from Washington Governor Jay Inslee.

Since 1946, Rigney has been employed at Tacoma General Hospital. Although she attempted to retire at the age of 67, she found that retirement didn’t suit her and she was back to work at the hospital just five months later. Currently she works there two days a week helping to prep the OR.

Sherri Morris, assistant nurse manager at the hospital, told Today.com, "She runs circles around all of us. She's a wealth of wisdom and knowledge, and we absolutely love her."

The hospital posted a video of the birthday surprise on YouTube. The heartwarming video, which has already received more than 200,000 views, shows a very surprised and delighted Rigney receiving a bouquet of flowers, tiara, and sash to celebrate the occasion. The hospital’s CEO and other executive staff were all in attendance for the big day.
