Multivitamin Mineral Supplements May Be Heart-Healthy for Women

Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) say they may have found a correlation between heart health and long-term multivitamin mineral supplement use in women. In a study that analyzed more than 20 years of data on deaths from heart disease, researchers found that women who took multivitamin supplements that included minerals were 35 percent less likely to die from heart disease.

The study’s unique finding, which is published online in The Journal of Nutrition, was not found to be true for men or for women who took multivitamin mineral supplements for fewer than three years. Because of that, researchers are cautious about attributing a direct connection between heart health and multivitamin mineral supplement use without further studies.

“Our study suggests the possibility that there is such a connection for women, which is an interesting finding but to know for sure would require a clinical trial,” says Regan Bailey, a registered dietitian and researcher at the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements.

Regan acknowledges women who take multivitamin mineral supplements may have other health habits that contribute to their heart health.
