Summer Is Here: Prepare for the Burns

Summer Is Here: Prepare for the Burns

The American Burn Association reports that in 2013, approximately 450,000 burn injuries required medical attention in the United States. Now that summer is here, many Americans are facing injuries caused by sunburn and grilling-related burns. In fact, when we posed this question to our Facebook users:

Summer is coming! What is the craziest summer injury you've encountered on the job?

Our responses had to do entirely with burns.

Burns Related to the Sun

Summer is coming! What is the craziest summer injury you've encountered on the job?

Deborah Myers: "The guy who walked in so stiff from his sunburn that had covered him in leaked fluid that  and bandages on him. He had so many margaritas at the beach that he fell asleep on the beach. He thought that went so well he did it again the next day. I don't think he thinks it's such a good idea anymore."

Alcohol and sunbathing are not an ideal combination. Those who imbibe are more likely to fall asleep and be unaware that they are burning. But snoozing into a sunburn isn’t the only risk faced by summer drinkers.

Author Tracy Rose recently published an article entitled Skin Cancer Risk Increases with Alcoholic Drinks in which she reports that according to the British Journal of Dermatology, consuming alcoholic beverages in the sun makes the UV light even more dangerous thus increasing your risk of skin cancer by as much as 55 percent! This is true even with light or moderate drinking.

Be sure to warn friends, family and patients of the dangers of the sun this summer and be prepared to start treating patients with severe sun burns.

Burns Related to Cooking Out

Summer is coming! What is the craziest summer injury you've encountered on the job?

Sharon Barela: "60% burns after adding gasoline to a barbecue pit, second and third degree."

There are a number of mistakes people make while grilling which lead to innumerable burn injuries every year in America. Using gasoline to light a barbecue pit, like Sharon’s patient did, is an extremely dangerous practice that, unfortunately, happens more often than you might believe.

Other mistakes people make include smoking while handling propane cylinders, allowing children to run and play near a hot grill, and even popping fireworks near propane tanks. Grilling out is fun and as American as apple pie on a nice summer day, but caution is always key.

Burns related to Fireworks

This, of course, leads us to the other American tradition: suffering burns from fireworks on the Fourth of July. Though such injuries were not mentioned by any of our Facebook fans, they are expected and prepared for in Emergency Rooms across the country every Fourth of July.

Fireworks are a lot of fun, but they can also be extremely dangerous, particularly when misused or incorrectly handled.

Enjoy Your Summer

Well, nurses, in spite of the inevitable burns you are likely to see and treat this summer, we at AMRI hope that you and your family have a safe and enjoyable summer. Share your summer-burn stories with us on our Facebook page. We’d love to hear them.
